全米で一大ブームを巻き起こしているミステリー・ドラマ・シリーズに登場する名探偵。2002年７月にＵＳＡネットワークでパイロット版が放映され、９月にシリーズが開始するやいなやたちまち高視聴率をマークし、全米３大ネットワークの一つであるＡＢＣでも放映が開始されて人気を集めています。
主人公のエイドリアン・モンクは元々はサンフランシスコ警察の刑事でその類稀な推理力で数多くの難事件を解決してきた名刑事でした。
ところがジャーナリストだった妻トゥルーディが何者かによって殺害され、その事件が迷宮入りとなって以来、妄想や強迫観念に囚われるようになり、過度の恐怖症に陥ってしまい休職を余儀なくされてしまいます。
高い所や暗い場所が全くダメで、目に見えない細菌が気になり除菌ティッシュが手放せないほどの潔癖症。加えてほんのちょっとした物のズレが気になって仕方ない神経質な所があるかと思えば、パニックになると訳の分からない宇宙語を話し周囲を唖然とさせるなど、社会への適応能力はほとんどゼロに等しく…刑事復帰までには依然として険しい道のりが続きます。
もっともその一方で持ち前の推理力や観察眼は以前にも増して研ぎ澄まされており、元上司だったストットルマイヤー警部もモンクの推理力には一目置いており、いつも難事件に遭遇すると助言を仰ぐためにモンクのもとを訪れます。
そしてモンクも警部の要請に応じ、助手のシャローナ（のちナタリーに交替）を伴って”犯罪コンサルタント”として警察の犯罪捜査に協力するのです。
毎回風変わりな性癖で周囲の人間を困らせ、視聴者を笑いの渦に巻き込みながらも、最後にはアッと驚くような超人的な推理力を発揮して難事件を解決に導いていく。─そのギャップこそがこのシリーズの最大の魅力といえると思います。
