（新樹社）		 　アメリカ本格黄金時代の代表的作家の一人スチュアート・パーマーの生み出したオールド・ミスの女教師探偵。通称ヒルディー。

　初登場時の長編「ペンギンは知っていた」当時は39歳で、馬のような顔に風変わりな帽子を被り、黒い傘をいつも手放さず、事件があるとニューヨーク市警のオスカー・パイパー警部の所に押しかけて、ドタバタを演じては事件を解決していきます。

　ユーモラスな作風の中にも妥協せず真実、正義を追究していく女性教師の活躍に多くのファンが共感し、このシリーズは30年以上に渡って続く人気シリーズとなりました。

　わが国では主に短編を中心に邦訳がなされていましたが、近年になって第１作「ペンギンは知っていた」が邦訳されました。その他の作品の邦訳も期待したい所です。
