イギリス黄金時代の作家クリストファー・ブッシュの長編作品の大多数に登場する探偵。

私立探偵ですが、ジョージ・コバーン副警視総監を伯父にもち、ヤードのジョージ・ワートン警視とは親友の間柄であって警察のと関わりも深く、その関係でしばしば警察の捜査に協力します。

ケンブリッジ大学で経済学を学び、優秀な成績で卒業後している教養溢れる人物で、かなりの資産家でもあります。経済学者としてジュランゴ社の財政担当重役を務めたり、『放蕩者の経済学』『株式仲買人の聖務日課書』などの著書を発表しています。 第二次大戦後にはブロード・ストリート探偵社を設立し、また小説家としても活躍する才人です。

全部で63の長編と１つの短編に登場しますが、８作目以降の作品の題名には全て「The Case of the ～」がついているのが大きな特徴です。
