コール夫妻の生み出したイギリスのスコットランド・ヤードの警察官探偵。ロンドンのシティスクールを卒業後巡査となり、38歳にして警視に昇進します。
ある事件が原因で辞職し一時期私立探偵として活躍しますが、３年の後請われて再びスコットランド・ヤードに復帰を果たしました。
決して派手さはありませんが、コツコツと捜査をしていき地道に事件を解決していく警察官の鑑のような人物です。他方で困った時には妻に助言を求めるなど、人間味のある一面も覗かせてくれます。
