怪盗小説の先駆け的作家

「完全犯罪大百科/上」 （東京創元社） 　カナダ生まれのイギリスの作家・自然科学者。ミステリの世界では怪盗小説の嚆矢とされている1897年発表のクレイ大佐ものの短編集「アフリカの百万長者」の著者として有名な作家です。 　またシャーロック・ホームズの生みの親であるアーサー・コナン・ドイルとは親友の間柄だったらしく、クレイ大佐シリーズもドイルの一連のホームズ作品に触発されて書かれたものだと言われています。 　カナダのオンタリオ州の港町キングストン近郊に牧師の第二子として生まれ、アメリカで教育を受けた後、イギリスに戻りオックスフォード大学を卒業。卒業後は科学者として活躍し、科学書に関してはおびただしい数の著書を残しています。 　また1873年にはジャマイカに渡って黒人学校で教鞭を執りますが、生徒が集まらず学校は閉鎖。再びイギリスに戻った頃から執筆活動を開始し、約30冊の長編小説を含むおよそ50の著書を残しています。 　それらの著作の中でも特に有名なのが1895年発表の「The Woman Who Did」で、女性の自立・自我の目覚めというテーマを扱い、主人公の自由奔放な生き方を描いたという問題小説で、当時のヴィクトリア朝社会からは背徳の書として指弾されたそうです。 　また同年に発表された「The British Barbarians」という作品は、タイムマシンをテーマにしたSF小説の古典として名高い作品のようです。 　ミステリー小説としては、怪盗小説のさきがけとなったクレイ大佐もの「アフリカの百万長者」の他、行動的な若いメイド、ミス・ロイス・ケイリー嬢の世界漫遊冒険を描いたミステリ短編集「ケイリーの冒険」（1898-1899）や、写真のような記憶力と女性特有の直感に優れ、亡き父の冤罪を晴らすべく、真犯人である仇敵セヴァスチャン教授を執拗に追いつめていく美人看護婦ヒルダ・ウェイドの活躍する短編集「ヒルダ・ウェイド」（1899-1900）の計３冊を残しています。 「シャーロック・ホームズの ライヴァルたち１」 （早川書房）
