ロナルド・Ａ・ノックスと並ぶ黒衣の探偵作家。 二代続いた国教会系の地方牧師の家に生まれ、晩年にはオックスフォード・クライストチャーチの参事会員を勤めるまでになったそうです。
ミステリに関しては鉄道を題材とする作品を多く発表していますが、アマチュア探偵ソープ・へイズルの活躍する短編集「スリリングな鉄道物語」はクロフツに先立ち、鉄道ミステリの嚆矢とされる短編集で、この短編集は〈クイーンの定員〉にも選ばれています。
わが国では残念ながら現在のところ単独での短編集はありませんが、名アンソロジー「世界鉄道推理傑作選１」に２編が収められるなど、他の作家とのアンソロジーに短編が数編収録されています。
